Cheerleaders In Lockdown - their own words!

Simon Grigg |

At Living Cheer we wanted to know how the impact of lockdown, with no face-to-face contact to their squads, clubs or team-mates, was having on cheerleaders! So we asked for 50-100 words from cheerleaders about what they were doing to remain positive, motivated and ready for when they could return to cheerleading.

The response to our call was fantastic and we selected five girls to share their thoughts. Here are their heartfelt words. What stood out for us was how central cheerleading was to their lives and how much they were looking forward to cheerleading returning soon.

My name is Sophie R. and I am an assistant coach for a small club in Rotherham. “Cheerleading for me is a huge escape from what is happening in the outside world! I for one feel that training daily and doing online training and fitness sessions is helping me to improve on aspects that we don’t always work on in the gym. I am hugely missing my best friends and my cheer sisters and

can’t wait to be back in the gym helping to support the younger athletes and my team mates! Being able to complete my foundations qualification and my level 1&2 for BGU has been a huge part of this experience and I can’t wait to put all I have learned into practice!!  - Sophie R.

Though lockdown is tough for all, having little school work to complete makes filling my spare time hard. Cheerleading became the main focus of my lockdown and has kept me going throughout. Constantly working on bettering my skills and gaining strength and stamina is important to me for when we return to the gym.

Knowing how tough people find it, keeping the team close and motivated became my main priority. I wouldn’t be able to deal with lockdown well without cheerleading and am now stronger than ever ready to smash the new season.

Being a cheerleader in lockdown has many emotions. It is so bizarre to think that this time last year the cheer world was getting prepared for their first competition of the season whereas this year we couldn’t be further away from that. It is so upsetting for so many coaches, athletes, event organisers, parents, and families that we are unable to compete and do the sport we all love at the moment. However staying positive and motivated is so important.

Zoom Calls and Social Media are the most positive things ensuring that we can still communicate with each other in this time of uncertainty. This will be over soon, and we will all be back together doing the sport we love, creating the best memories.

Since March 2020, these times have been so unpredictable and the only thing pushing me through it is the regular cheer classes on zoom, the guest coaches and the fun virtual cheer quizzes. They continue to help me improve as a cheerleader, but also to stay motivated. It’s made me work harder, train harder, and to make myself the best I can be.

I am proud to say that none of these lockdowns have defeated me as a cheerleader but have only made me stronger. Even though i miss seeing all my cheer family, it’s nice to see their sweaty red faces on Zoom! I can’t wait for the day when we can train and compete again; it’s going to be amazing :)

Lockdown has been an opportunity for me to work on my fitness and flexibility, and do so with my friends and teammates. We've been doing zoom sessions 2-3 times a week, working on conditioning, stretching and fun, different things like headstands, yoga and dance nights.

My flexibility has improved to the best point its been in YEARS and it's been amazing to still have online sessions to connect with everyone and keep my motivation and mood up!

Many thanks to these girls for writing so well and expressing what we all feel. Cheerleading will be back soon!
